What is SEND?

All children and young people develop at different rates and have both areas of strength and areas of weakness.

Madrassah pupils who have additional or different requirements from other pupils, may qualify as having SEN – that is special educational needs. These special educational needs can range from learning difficulties to problems making friends.

The abbreviation – SEND – refers to pupils with SEN who are also disabled. A disabled person is someone with a physical or mental impairment, which affects their ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities.

Tips:

  • Madrassah staff should be aware of pupils who have SEN or SEND and support should be put in place to make Islamic education accessible to all Madrassah pupils.
  • Madrassah teachers need to balance meeting the needs of all the pupils in the class (by differentiating.)
  • Support and provision will be different depending on the type of SEN and SEND.
